What are slider windows?
Sliding windows open horizontally as opposed to typical hung windows, which open vertically. These windows are most commonly found in tight areas or large living spaces that are in need of additional ventilation. They’re also very popular in modern homes.
Key features of slider windows
- Open horizontally similar to sliding doors
- Slider windows are often wider than vertically opening hung windows
- Less expensive than double-hung windows due to its simpler operation and fewer mechanical parts
Choose between single slider, double slider, and three-pane sliding windows
There are three main types of slider windows:
- A single pane slider window in which one pane is fixed and the other pane is movable along the sash. You can decide whether you want the left or the right pane to be movable.
- A double pane slider window may have two or three panes of glass, but only two panes actually move. In this configuration, you can open either side (or both) for more ventilation. These window types are great for ventilation, temperature control, and sound insulation.
- Three-pane sliders typically feature a large picture window in the middle and smaller movable panes of each side.
Advantages of slider windows
Slider windows are known for giving stunning views of the outdoors. Minimal framing and its availability in larger sizes than traditional hung windows make slider windows a popular option for many homeowners.
The fact that slider windows are so wide makes it a very attractive option for homeowners. Many of our customers that opt for slider windows for their project like the amount of natural light and fresh air that a slider window can bring in while open.
Slider windows are easier to maintain and use. Older customers like the simpler operation of slider windows, for example, as opposed to hung windows which require slightly more effort to open and close. In fact, as long as you can reach the bottom of the window, you can open it, usually without a ladder.
This type of window is also known for its flexibility, from being part of a big living space in a three-panel arrangement with a center picture window to fitting in tight spaces such as hallways or small rooms.
Things to keep in mind about slider windows
Slider windows are a great option. However, we want you to keep a few things in mind before choosing these types of windows for your project.
- Slider windows do require a little bit more maintenance than most other types of windows. It’s very important that you keep the window tracks clean and lubricated. Dirt and debris will get caught in slider window tracks, making it harder to operate. Homeowners with slider windows typically use vacuums or damp cloths along with spray-on lubricant.
- The inside of slider windows are very easy to clean. The outside, however, can be slightly challenging for some homeowners. We also have window models available that have panes that you can tilt or pop out.
- We generally recommend that you select slider windows with drainage holes to prevent water from pooling in the window seal, causing mildew or damage to the track.
- Because slider windows don’t seal as well as casement or awning windows, you may give up some energy efficiency.
